Hoodie GSM Guide: Fabric Weight, Fleece & Fit

Understand hoodie GSM, French terry, brushed fleece and fabric blends. Learn what weight reveals, what it cannot prove, and what to check before buying.

GSM helps you compare how much fabric weighs. It does not tell you, by itself, how warm a hoodie will feel or how many washes it will survive. Read weight alongside the fabric construction, fiber blend, fit and care instructions.

What GSM actually measures

GSM means grams per square metre. A fabric rated at 300 GSM weighs 300 grams per square metre; 450 GSM fabric has 50% more mass over the same area. That does not mean a finished 450 GSM hoodie weighs 450 grams, or that it is 50% warmer.

A garment's total weight includes its size, hood, ribbing, pockets and hardware. Do not treat a shipping weight or a whole-garment weight as fabric GSM.

Light, medium or heavy: compare within a range

Brands use lightweight, midweight and heavyweight differently. Instead of relying on a universal cutoff, compare two similar hoodies with published fabric weights. All else equal, a higher GSM means more mass per area. It does not specify fabric thickness, stiffness or insulation.

For easy layering, look for a hoodie that fits comfortably under your jacket without restricting movement. For a substantial streetwear shape, compare body width, length and the fabric's drape as well as its stated weight.

French terry, brushed sweatshirt fleece and polar fleece

French terry: commonly has a smooth outer face and visible loops on the inside. Check close-up photos and the product description for an unbrushed loopback finish.

Brushed sweatshirt fleece: has a raised, fuzzy inner surface. A soft interior can be appealing for lounging, but softness on arrival is not proof of resistance to pilling or repeated washing.

Polar fleece: is a different fleece family often associated with polyester outdoor layers. Its loft traps air. Do not assume an outdoor fleece jacket and a cotton-blend sweatshirt with the same fabric weight will feel alike.

Why weight is not a temperature rating

Warmth also depends on trapped air, construction, coverage, wind, moisture and what you wear underneath or over the hoodie. A heavy sweatshirt is not automatically windproof. We do not assign winter temperature limits to hoodies without relevant product testing.

Read the complete fiber blend

“Cotton hoodie” may describe a blend rather than 100% cotton. For example, the FAIABLE listing we reviewed states 42% cotton, 53% polyester and 5% other fibers. Read the actual composition for your selected color and style.

No blend percentage guarantees premium quality. Fabric construction, finishing and sewing matter too. Likewise, “100% cotton face” may describe only the surface, not the entire fabric.

Check fit and construction before buying

Compare chest, shoulder and body length with a hoodie you already like, using the seller's measurement method. For zip styles, check the hem measurement and recent zipper feedback. Look for close-up photos of seams, cuffs and the hood, but do not infer durability from a photo alone.

Reviews are most useful when they describe a specific size, color and period of use. Separate reports of softness on arrival from reports after several washes. One person's experience is not a measured defect rate.

Care and shrinkage: follow the label

Read the garment's washing and drying instructions before the first wash. Do not assume that a cotton-poly blend, a pre-shrunk label or a cross-grain construction guarantees zero shrinkage. Avoid making up a universal dryer setting for every hoodie.

For washed or distressed finishes, check additional seller instructions. The FAIABLE listing, for example, advises diluting detergent and avoiding direct bleach contact or forceful spot rubbing.

When a listing leaves GSM out

Treat the weight as unknown. Ask the seller for fabric mass per square metre if that detail matters to you. Do not calculate it from a whole hoodie on a kitchen scale without knowing the fabric area and accounting for all components.
