Quick answer: Some hoodies change size after washing and drying, but you cannot predict an exact percentage from the word “cotton” on a listing. Fabric construction, finishing and the care routine all matter. Choose a hoodie that fits now, then follow its label rather than trying to shrink it into shape.

Read the listing before choosing a size

Look for a complete fiber composition, a garment size chart, care instructions and any specific statement about preshrinking. “Preshrunk” is useful information, but it is not a promise that the garment will never change dimensions.

A listing that only says “premium fleece” leaves several questions unanswered. Ask the seller whether the measurements are taken from the finished garment, whether they are in inches or centimeters, and whether any measurement tolerance is stated.

Do not confuse four different fit problems

Actual shrinkage: The same garment measures smaller after care.

Different measuring technique: You measured from another point, pulled the fabric tighter, or included the hood in body length.

Temporary distortion: A damp garment has been stretched, folded or hung unevenly.

Original sizing: The hoodie was already narrower or shorter than expected before it was washed.

Keeping a baseline helps you distinguish these situations. Product photos and your memory of the fit are less useful than consistent measurements.

Measure before the first wash

  1. Lay the dry hoodie on a flat surface without stretching it.

  2. Measure chest width from underarm to underarm.

  3. Measure body length from the same shoulder reference point to the hem each time.

  4. Measure sleeve length using the brand’s method when available.

  5. Record the numbers, measurement units and a photograph of your tape placement.

Repeat the same checks after the garment is completely dry. Do not compare a wet hoodie with a dry one. If the brand uses a different measuring method, keep your personal comparison separate from the seller’s chart.

Should you buy a bigger size just in case?

Not automatically. Sizing up can add unwanted sleeve length, shoulder width and body bulk. Start with the seller’s garment measurements and compare them with a sweatshirt you already wear comfortably.

If the current measurements only just meet your minimum comfortable fit, look for clearer care information, a different cut or a retailer with an appropriate return policy. Check whether washing affects return eligibility before using a first wash as a fit test.

For an intentionally roomy silhouette, choose an oversized design rather than assuming one size larger will produce the same proportions. See our oversized hoodie comparison.

Reduce avoidable changes in your routine

Use the care instructions supplied with the garment. High heat is not a reliable tailoring method: different parts can change unevenly, and prints, trims or zippers may have their own restrictions. A lower-risk routine starts with the label and avoids unnecessary heat.

Support a wet garment when lifting it and reshape it gently if air drying is permitted. Follow our hoodie washing guide for the full preparation and drying checklist.

What to do if the fit changes

First confirm the measurements using your original method. Check the care label against the cycle and drying method you actually used. If a new garment changed unexpectedly despite following its instructions, document the difference and contact the retailer or manufacturer with the order details.

Avoid repeated hot washes, aggressive stretching or internet “unshrinking” recipes as a guaranteed fix. There is no universal recovery method for every blend, trim and finish. A local alterations professional can assess whether a specific adjustment is realistic.

Buying checklist

Before ordering, save the composition, size chart and care details. Check the seller’s return conditions. After delivery, assess the fit while the garment is dry and unwashed. Keep the tags until you decide whether it meets your needs.

Fabric weight is a separate question from dimensional stability. Learn the distinction in our hoodie GSM guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do cotton-blend hoodies never shrink? A blend is not a no-shrink guarantee. Use the product’s specific instructions and any documented dimensional-change information.

Can I shrink only the body and keep the sleeves unchanged? Home washing does not offer that precision. Choose better measurements or consider professional alterations.

Does heavyweight mean shrink-proof? No. GSM describes fabric mass per area, not a promise about size after washing.

Our recommendation: Prioritize a well-documented fit and manageable care routine. Do not buy a poorly fitting hoodie on the assumption that the laundry will correct it.
